Vizio sets have been known to cost much less than most competing brands in the market. Competing HDTVs don’t often cost less than those from Vizio. Among 42-inch models, Only the Westinghouse TX-42F430S and the AOC Envision L42H761 are cheaper than the Vizio 42 LCD HDTV VO42L but the Vizio 42 LCD HDTV VO42L still provides the more well-rounded package.

Good video deserves good audio, and the Vizio 42 LCD HDTV VO42LF provides it, within the limitations of any HDTV’s built-in speakers. The sound was quite muddy at full volume, but even the most devoted heavy-metal fan won’t be tempted to use that setting. At a more reasonable 50 percent volume, audio was still a bit muddy, but better than the sound of most TVs.

The Vizio couldn’t quite overtake the LG when it comes to picture quality. This is because Vizio’s images wasn’t all that perfect. Some images looked fuzzy and artifacts and pixelation appeared around moving objects. Flesh tones have problems too with it being too saturated.

The Vizio 42 LCD HDTV VO42L disappoints in ease of use and extra features; but compared with past Vizio sets, it shows improvement in both respects. For instance, the company has finally placed a few easy-access inputs on the side of the TV. But those connectors are recessed, making them harder to reach than other TVs’ easy-access inputs. And the rest of the inputs still face down, making for especially hard access.

As mentioned, the Vizion offers a more complete package than its contemporaries in the market. Its good video is paired with an excellent audio and this makes the Vizio 42 LCD HDTV VO42L appealing to consumers not keen on spending on extra audio devices. The Vizio 42 LCD HDTV VO42L’s built-in speakers provides just enough volume and quality to make it acceptable to the more standard users.

The remote control looks like a candidate for an Apple Computer Minimalist Design Award. It’s smallish, with few buttons and a strange, pits-in-a-grid surface. But its attempted coolness doesn’t make it convenient or intuitive to use. For instance, it has no Menu button; so you have to press the Enter button (which is labeled neither ‘Enter’ nor ‘Menu’) to access the menu. And since the remote doesn’t have an Aspect Ratio button or a Picture Size button, you must go deep into the menus to zoom in on a 4:3 program.

Given its price tag, the Vizio 42 LCD HDTV VO42L won’t give you everything you need in an HDTV set. However, it gives you just enough and when compared to other 42-inch sets in the market, the Vizio 42 LCD HDTV VO42L stands out.
