Sharp Aquos LC32D44U 32-Inch 720p LCD HDTV is a next-generation TV to carry you into the high-definition future. The D44U Series utilizes Sharp’s proprietary Advanced Super View/Black TFT Panel providing 7500:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio, 6ms response time and wide viewing angles (176°H x 176°V).

The screen resolution of the D44U is a standard 1,366 by 768 pixels, progressively scanned. The TV’s maximum input resolution with its HD-compatible video ports is 1080i, and the VGA port will accept computer resolutions up to 1,360 by 768. Most LCD HDTVs stretch the video picture beyond the edges of the active portion of the screen (overscanning the video picture), sacrificing detail that could otherwise be used to produce a clearer, more pleasing picture for the viewer. The D44U provided a menu option that eliminates video overscan with all HD sources (via HDMI and component video). This is a very rare, detail-preserving feature among LCDs with similar screen resolution. Video overscan with standard-definition sources measured an acceptable 6 percent.

The range of picture adjustments is above average for an entry-level set. You get seven picture modes, five of which can be adjusted and apply globally to every input, and another that’s truly independent per input. There are five color temperature presets, although as expected at this price, you can’t fine-tune the color temperature further than that. Three levels of noise reduction are available, along with a mode that engages 2:3 pull-down detection.

This unit unitizes the proprietary advanced Black/View TFT panel giving 7500:1 ratio of contrast, wide angles for viewing of 176 degrees horizontal and 176 degrees vertical and 6ms reply time. The Aquos LC32D44U 32-Inch 720p LCD HDTV A/V port connections are all located on the back of the display and face outward for easy access. HD-compatible video inputs include two HDMI ports, two component video ports, and a VGA port for PC use. An RF input is also available for tuning analog (NTSC), digital (ATSC), or unscrambled cable channels (QAM).

Even with its dynamic contrast system disabled, the D44U proved capable of delivering a well-contrasted, well-detailed picture. When configured for dark-room viewing, where peak brightness is limited to prevent eyestrain, the D44U produced a calibrated intra-frame contrast measurement of 1006:1, calculated using an average of multiple samples taken while displaying a checkerboard test pattern (average picture level). For LCD HDTV technology, this is a very good, as the D44U’s average black level measurement of 0.10 Cd/m2 is among the darkest levels I’ve measured to date. Adjusting the D44U’s backlight to its maximum setting slightly increased its average contrast calculation to 1043:1, with the average black level measuring a very respectable 0.21 Cd/m2.

Pros : The Sharp LC-32D44U produces a relatively deep shade of black and fine shadow detail; exhibits decent screen uniformity; sleek design; nice selection of picture controls; zero-overscan aspect ratio mode available.

Cons : Inaccurate primary colors; darker areas tend toward blue; spotty video processing with 1080i sources; subpar standard-definition processing; soft picture with PC sources; no easy-access front- or side-panel inputs.

The bottom line : While stylish and well featured for an entry-level HDTV, the 32-inch Sharp LC-32D44U’s picture quality falls short of expectations.
