Samsung’s LN52A850 is a one of the most impressive HDTV systems on the market today. Only the coach will beat your game-day seats thanks to enhanced LCD technology complemented by Auto Motion Plus 120 Hz technology. You’ll see crystal clear, action packed movies with unprecedented verve compliments of a sizzling fast 5 ms response rate to sharpen contrast and cut blurring.

Many LCD TVs have the tendency to oversaturate color information but the Samsung LN52A850 displays accurate, realistic colors along with deeply penetrating blacks to produce excellent depth. It’s important to note again that the 120Hz (auto motion plus) processing feature needs to be turned off to maximize depth and not introduce a contrived appearance. You will be rewarded by this strategy. Dark Shadow detail in the Blu Ray version of 300 occasionally got oversaturated with blacks losing detail. 120 LCD televisions (especially Samsung) are designed to give a 3D-ish effect. They do this through inserting extra film clips between the regular clips. This means that sports look AMAZING, but that movies look like you’re watching stage theater. Truly, like it’s live video. For some people this is amazing, for others it’s completely horrible. But don’t worry. Simply turn the 120 htz off or switch the TV to “Game” setting and you’ll have a traditional wonderful movie picture.

Your decision should really come between the 650 or the 850 if your focus is on the picture. If you feel that you want to consider sound as a big part of the package then the 750 should come into the mix too. The 650 and 750 have the same picture and the 750 has a bit more bass. However, the 850 has a higher grade of pixel and produces much deeper blacks and richer whites. The 850 adds greater depth and detail to your picture.

The menu system on the on the LN52A850 has an excellent little tutorial which helps the user understand what each function does. It’s a slick looking- transparent menu but the scrolling navigation wheel is not fast to use. It’s a little cumbersome when you want to make a quick adjustment. Another negative here is the gloss black remote which shows fingerprints too readily. The remote is backlit but does not have an aspect ratio button on it. The source button controls input selection.
