LG’s striking LCD TV, the 42LG60 is, at just 45 mm, is one of the slimmest TV available. The model has been developed as an iconic product with unconventional design and all the smartest and latest features. Featuring a full HD 120 Hz panel, it provides exceptional picture quality, which can be optimized for fast-moving images including movies, sports and games. Meanwhile, the 42LG60’s intelligent sensor automatically adjusts brightness according to the ambient environment, offering both optimized picture quality as well as a 50 percent reduction in power consumption. Incorporating LG’s invisible speakers, the 42LG60 delivers clear sound with a wide sweet spot while maintaining a seamless look.

The entire back of the LCD panel is red, which produces red accents when you look at the TV from an angle; the color serves little purpose, though, because people rarely spend much time gazing at the back of their big-screen TVs. The bezel is thin on the top and sides, but about three times thicker at the bottom, where LG hides the unit’s superior-sounding, down-firing speakers. As nice as it is not to see speaker grilles, the extra-large bottom bezel was distracting and unattractive, especially since everything else about the display looks stunning.

A number of advanced features come standard. Individual six-color controls are easy to find in the Expert Control level of the picture menu. And with a single click of the remote, you can locate and adjust many accurately calibrated presets, from Sports mode to Movie mode.

Most sensors just measure the brightness of ambient light in the room. But LG’s Intelligent Sensor setting uses a complex set of algorithms to measure not just brightness but also contrast, color, sharpness, and white balance. The feature worked well most of the time, though on one occasion it briefly garbled some images while ceaselessly trying to adjust the settings to match its changed surroundings.

The 42LG60 includes eight selectable picture modes. One of them is aptly called Intelligent Sensor. With Intelligent Sensor, “the most suitable picture is automatically adjusted according to the surrounding conditions.” You can use the other seven modes as supplied, or you can adjust each one individually.

The Expert picture modes offer unusually flexible color adjustments. The Expert white-balance adjustments in the user menu provide high and low settings for red, green, and blue, or 10-point adjustments. There’s also an Expert mode color-management system in the user menu that offers individual color and tint controls for red, green, blue, yellow, cyan, and magenta. Oddly, the owner’s manual doesn’t discuss either of these features in detail.

The code-programmable remote can control three components, apart from the TV itself. It’s nicely arranged and easy to use, although it has no backlighting and does not allow for direct selection of inputs. On the plus side, the colorful onscreen input menu highlights only those inputs that are currently connected to sources. You can label the inputs from a limited list of optional names.

You also get password-protected parental control, closed captioning, a sleep timer, and auto shut-off. The only common feature that’s missing is picture-in-picture.
