LCD or Light Crystal Display is a screen that is made of a thin layer of liquid crystals sandwiched between two glass plates. When electricity passes through these crystals, a display of richly colored pixels light up and produces image.

LCD originally designed for electronic display devices, now this technology is widely used to manufacture high-resolution televisions. Liquid crystal televisions work on Thin Film Transistor (TFT) technology. Their screen consists of a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between two transparent layers. A bulb placed behind the screen illuminates the TFT panel. Upon receiving the data, the liquid crystals align themselves in various degrees. The alignment of the crystals blocks unwanted light and only required light gets transmitted. The degree of alignment decides what color and contrast will be filtered through the panel.

LCD TVs make use of digital technologies. This type of technology gives us a well-defined and clear pictures compared to the images presented by the usual cathode ray tubes.

LCD TV screens are very thin and lightweight and can be placed almost anywhere in a room. You can mount it on a wall for a more cinema-like experience, or place it in an elegant LCD stand if you need a cabinet storage for other electronic devices.

Most LCD TVs are made in a widescreen format making LCD widescreen compatible with widescreen DVDs and High Definition programming.

The basic advantage of LCD televisions is their flatness. Even a LCD widescreen TV will be no more than a couple of inches thick. This also makes them lightweight. LCD widescreen TVs can therefore be fixed to wall mounts with supports. Due to this reason, one finds LCD widescreen TVs in hotels, airports, hospitals, discotheques, bars and wherever TVs can be mounted.

LCD Widescreen means that the LCD has an aspect ratio of 16:9, which has been growing in popularity over the last couple of years. LCD Widescreen is better because it allows you to see the whole picture as it was intended in movies. LCD widescreen allows a wider viewing area which is very important, because on non-LCD widescreen movies or 4:3 aspect ratio movies a large portion of the sides are cut off, and that can change a dramatic part of the movies into a not-so-dramatic part. With computers, widescreen allows you to have more sideways space for your applications, in overall computer usage it doesn’t really have any side effects, and it makes it look equally cool. Most LCD computer monitors nowadays are being sold in Widescreen aspect ratios; you have to specifically look for an LCD monitor with a 4:3 aspect ratio anymore.
