Samsung LN46A750 46-Inch 1080p DLNA LCD HDTV with RED Touch of Color

Samsung has crammed all this stuff into a nice-looking package. The LN46A750 follows the company’s Touch of Color styling, which adds a subtle red tint to the plexiglass base and the translucent bezel that surrounds the screen. But it’s the bezel’s clear, beveled edges that give this design some distinction. Another nice touch is the clean front, made possible by hiding the main speakers under the screen, facing down; two more speakers project from the TV’s upper back. Surprisingly, this arrangement delivered robust sound for a flat-panel TV, particularly with the TruSurround XT circuitry turned on. Further contributing to the clean look is the heavily camouflaged touchpanel on the front bezel, which has buttons for power, source, and menu as well as rockers for channel and volume.

Black levels appear pretty natural due to the transparent plexiglass outer screen (as opposed to an antiglare screen). The black levels are not plasma like but are very good for an LCD.  Aspect ratio processing and sizing was spot on non-distorted from a variety of input sources. Selection is 16:9, 4:3, Zoom 1, 2, 3.

The LN46A750 has plenty of connection options, including four HDMI 1.3 ports, with one in the set of convenience jacks on the TV’s left side. The Samsung’s Movie mode looked very natural out of the box and delivered a grayscale that measured not far off the 6,500-K reference standard.

The menu on the LN46A750 is slick looking- transparent but the navigation is not swift. The scrolling wheel on the remote is slow to use and a little awkward. Another negative here is the gloss black remote which shows fingerprints too readily. The remote is backlit but does not have an aspect ratio button on the interface. The source button controls input selection.

To get to the Auto Motion Plus (120Hz) setting go to Picture, then scroll down to Picture Options, then scroll down to Auto Motion Plus where you can turn it On or Off using the side arrow keys.

Audio output was excellent from our Dolby Digital Test disc. Volume level was plentiful and sound rich and full at just 35% of capacity. Virtual Surround sound effects also impressed us from the 10W X 10W speakers.

Pros : Superb black-level performance with solid shadow detail; highly accurate color; improved 120Hz dejudder processing; unbridled feature set including network streaming, built-in interactive content and news, stocks and weather feeds; broad selection of picture setup options.

Cons : Expensive; clear plastic layer on frame conducts distracting light; red color isn’t for everyone; shiny screen reflects ambient room lighting; some artifacts when dejudder modes are engaged; most interactive content seems tacked-on; streaming doesn’t support third-party DLNA servers; awkward clickwheel remote.

The bottom line : The excellent picture quality and unique interactive features of the Samsung LN46A750 flat-panel LCD TV aren’t quite worth the higher price tag.
